In sewing, we have what we call temporary and permanent stitches. Temporary stitches are used to temporarily hold a seam or trim in place until it can be permanently sewn, usually with a long running stitch made by hand or machine called a tacking stitch or basting stitch.
Permanent stitches are use to hold a seam or fabric together permanently. They are sturdy, strong and can hold for a long time.
